I have always reiterated that money is not the best motivator. At some extent, it can motivate employees to perform well but it will not suffice. Appreciation, with no monetary value, is one of the best motivators there is. An honest and timely appreciation, like a tap on the shoulder (be cautious though, some women employees find this offensive) can boost the morale of an employee.
Another way, which I religiously implemented when I was still in my ‘corporate’ days, is remembering the important dates of our valued employees, such birthdays and anniversaries. Birthday cards and anniversary cards were sent out promptly by my staff to these people. Not only that, their names were posted either on the bulletin board or on the company newsletter. Simple ways, yet the impact was great. Our employees feel that they are important to the organization.
For jobs well done, we do not simply send them the typical thank you cards, we endeavor to either recognize their accomplishments in public via a brief gathering of employees and/or a commendation letter / plaque. Believe, this simple inexpensive token can not only boost their pride and morale but impels them to do more.

Subscribe toIf only I could share these with my HR people. I think they've had a hard time because we've had layoffs lately and it's tough for them. It's just a bit awkward so I think they say and do nothing.
It's the perception anyway.
I could not agree with you more! When I worked hard and showed dedication to my employer, I would at least appreciate a, "Thank you", "Great job!" or something. Needless to say, I when a better opportunity came along (like running my own business), I took it.
Great post...kudos!
When I was working as an Intern in college I had a boss who made me feel wonderful -- her secret is that she always said thank you. Even thank you for doing my regular job that I got paid for -- she would go out of her way to tell me how much she appreciate me, how I helped make the XYZ project go so well, etc.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is just say thanks!

IMO, this kind of gesture is probably the cheapest benefits an employer can give to his employees, yet it is the most effective in terms of motivation and morale boosting.
Some of the ways we show appreciation are by buying employees lunch. Once in awhile we even schedule a time to get out early and go see a movie or some other form of entertainment. These really go a long way to boost morale.
That's an excellent idea Todd. Actually, that will not only boost morale, it will also foster camaraderie.
