Negotiation Skill Necessary for Small Business Success?
“During a negotiation, it would be wise not to take anything personally. If you leave personalities out of it, you will be able to see opportunities more objectively.” ~Brian Koslow (American author and entrepreneur)
Whether you are in business or not, we negotiate everyday without us being conscious about it. Negotiation is not only incidental but a necessary skill if we need to live our lives productively on a daily basis. Much more if you are in small business. It is necessary. It is essential. It is indispensable. Without which, you will be always be on the losing end with all your transactions with your clients, business partners, and suppliers.

It is said, that wars would have been avoided if only leaders of opposing parties have the necessary negotiation skills. I’d say that wrong business decisions and business compromises would have been avoided if business owners are skillful negotiators. Sales conversions are higher if and only sales people have undergone rigid sales negotiation training. In the HRM (Human Resource Management) context, the same situation holds true. Labor disputes, employees’ malfeasance towards management, and Union problems would have been avoided if only if HRM managers have honed their negotiation skills.

One is not born with negotiation skills. However, these can be learned. Scottwork offers excellent Negotiation Training Courses for sales people, business owners and executives. They help “clients to negotiate more effectively for stronger internal and external relationships, better deal outcomes and business success.” Their Negotiation Training has been proven to make lasting improvements on those who have taken them. These are the kinds of training programs that are ideal investments for HRM professionals and small business owners, I could not stress more.

Negotiation skills are definitely necessary not only for small business success, but in all aspects of our activity.
