It's a vicious cycle that we cannot seem to control, though we can manage the 'impacts' created during downturns.

Similarly, our career's ups and downs can be managed. Recession or not, we should not stop in developing our core competencies and job knowledge.

@ plin

well, not exactly. For in my mind, what is actually changing is on how things are being done, e.g., in journalism, how news is being broadcast. The advent of the internet and web 2.0 (and blogging) has definitely affected most journalists in the conventional media. However, if they are keen on what is developing, as you have aptly pointed out there, they could have rode into the mainstream web 2.0 and still use the skills and experiences they acquired through the years. In fact, many of the well known probloggers around are coming from this field and are earning more now. Unlike Daniel Lyons a.k.a. "the Fake Steve Jobs" who claimed he never earned better in blogging than his previous gig as a journalist. err

I agree with Maureen regarding it depends on what ...

I agree with Maureen regarding it depends on what field you are in. I don't think people should be living in fear and constantly be told they need to "up their game" because of today's economy.
